Nod to John Martyn

A Nod to John Martyn with Alan Murphy

Sunday 8th September

I remember where I was when I heard my first John Martyn album "So Far So Good" in 1977 and it gave me a direction in music which lasts to this day.

I've watched John live in Glasgow Students Union - Met him after the gig at Edinburgh Odeon 1978 - Glasgow Sub Club - Glasgow Pavilion Theatre - Glasgow Concert hall - & Dublin Vicar Street.

I am very grateful to have played Solid Air and You Can Discover with Danny Thompson at a John Martyn music gathering, watched him playing Good By Pork Pie Hat, and listened to some of his stories over breakfast.

I've bought his "Wotcher" T shirt with his own sketch of his lifelong bass...Victoria.

John died on the 29th of January 2009. On this tenth anniversary year I played a remembrance gig and it was a pleasure to revisit John’s songs. I would like to again share some of his music along with my own compositions as a “Nod to JM” in the fabulous Ferry.

MAN

J.J. Marsh

Burger & Sides Night

Wednesday 18th September

Joakim "JJ" Marsh, born in 1966 is a Swedish guitarist and composer, and is probably best known for his long collaboration with Glenn Hughes. As a teenager Marsh recorded two albums with Spellbound, Breaking the Spell and Rockin 'Reckless. The band also recorded material for a third album, for which Marsh wrote the songs together with the singer Hasse Fröberg, but they didn't manage to get a record deal and the album wasn't released until some ten years later. Spellbound disbanded in 1988, but they have done a few reunion concerts since that, as late as 2014.

In the early 1990s he formed the band Studfarm with singer Janne Hellman. In 1995, Marsh met Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Sabbath) and began a partnership in which Marsh during the period 1996-2008 co-wrote most of the songs on ten studio albums, apart from Hughes' solo albums also two albums with Joe Lynn Turner in the Hughes Turner Project, abbreviated HTP. Also working alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith during this period.

Marsh released his first solo album Music from Planet Marsh in 2005, with fellow musicians Tomas Bodin, Thomas Broman and Kjell Haraldsson, the latter two had both played with Glenn Hughes and HTP. Marsh and Broman is currently in the band Bridge to Mars, who released the single In A White Light in 2013, and their first album in 2016. Marsh has also appeared as a guitarist on albums with Phenomena, Tomas Bodin, Mats/Morgan Band and art musician Simon Steensland.

Sinnerboy

Sinnerboy Celebrate the music of Rory Gallagher

Burger & Sides Night

Thursday 26th September

William Rory Gallagher was an Irish blues – rock guitarist, songwriter and band leader, born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal and raised in Cork, he was quickly recognised as one of the world’s greatest exponents of the genre. Renowned for his charismatic live performances and dedication to his craft, his career was cut tragically short when, at the age of only 47, he succumbed to liver problems and passed from this earth.

In June of 1996, one year after the death of Rory Gallagher, Sinnerboy played their first "TRIBUTE TO RORY" gig in their home town of Manchester. Now 20 years on it has become an annual pilgrimage for thousands of Rory fans in the UK. The annual British tribute organised by Barry is now back in his home town of Manchester.

This ever popular event has raised the profile of Sinnerboy throughout Europe where they are now recognized as the most authentic Rory tribute band around.

Maggie Bell & Dave Kelly

Maggie Bell & Dave Kelly

Friday 27th September

Maggie Bell and Dave Kelly renewed their partnership in 2016 after a two year lay-off with some selected venues and festivals in the UK and Canada, and will tour the UK again in 2019. They will play just a few select venues.

The on-stage chemistry is immediately apparent, stemming from their love and respect for the music they play as well as the deep knowledge of the genre. Although both coming originally out of blues/soul explosion of the late 1960's their repertoire is far broader than just that. When they first got together in 2007 they both wished to sing 'any song that took their fancy', so the set includes folk, rock, country, gospel as well as blues and soul.

Their stage craft is as would be expected from two professionals with a collective experience of 100 years, but this is no slick show wheeled out with any predictability. Indeed when Maggie and Dave take to the stage 'anything can happen' (and often does). One promoter commented " I don't know how they make such a sound with one guitar and two voices - it sounded like a full band"

Maggie Bell & Dave Kelly
An evening with two stalwarts of the British R&B scene, two great voices, two great reputations. A wonderful evening of acoustic blues, soul and good times, and no doubt a little humour.

Maggie Bell - Scotland's Queen of Soul, founder member of Stone the Crows, later had an incredibly successful solo career on both sides of the Atlantic, now once again back on the music scene after a 20 year lay off. She was a resounding hit at the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in 2008.

Dave Kelly - London's slide guitar king, having learned his trade in the backing bands of, and recording with, Son House, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells to name but five blues legends, a founder member of The Blues Band, still wowing audiences after nearly 30 years..

John Otway

John Otway & The Big Band

Sunday 29th September

From the age of 9, John Otway knew he wanted to be a pop star. But even at that young age, having listened to his sister's Beatles and Stones records, he knew he would never be able to do what they do. However, when his sister got the latest Bob Dylan album, he knew there was a place for him and he set about learning how to play guitar.

Otway had to wait until 1977 and the rise of punk before his dream of fame and fortune would finally become a reality. Having caught the eye of the producers of the BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, Otway's performance on that show would grab the attention of the watching audience. Otway, ever the showman, decided to jump on to the amplifier of his colleague during a performance of Bob Lind's Cheryl's Going Home. (Un)fortunately for Otway, he misjudged his leap and sent Wild Willy Barrett’s amplifier tumbling as he crashed down straddling the box under the amp.

The full force of the impact was absorbed by the most tender part of his body, but in doing this one simple act of recklessness and his wanton disregard for his own safety, Otway was the talk of everyone who watched that evening's programme.

Not only did he see a surge in his audiences, sales of Otway's sixth single, the half-spoken love song Really Free increased dramatically and reached number 27 in the UK Singles Chart. An appearance on the BBC's flagship music programme Top of the Pops, where Otway & Barrett were introduced by Elton John later, Otway was finally a star. It would however, be his greatest success for some time.

Despite numerous attempts to get back into the charts, Otway would have to wait 25 years for his next taste of chart success. In the intervening years, Otway would become an actor; write an autobiography (Cor Baby That’s Really Me: Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure); perform sold out shows at London’s Astoria and Royal Albert Hall; make regular appearances at both Glastonbury and Edinburgh Festivals; and write the nation’s seventh favourite lyric of all-time (beating Bob Dylan and Paul Simon in the process).

In 2002, Otway achieved what he desired the most – a second hit. A concerted publicity campaign saw Otway reach number 9 with the disco pastiche Bunsen Burner and a second appearance on the Top of the Pops. Despite this success, a planned world tour collapsed, but Otway continued to gig extensively around the UK either with his band, as a duo with Wild Willy Barrett or solo. A follow-up autobiography was penned in 2010 and titled: I Did It Otway: Regrets I’ve Had a Few.

In 2012, to celebrate his 60th birthday, Otway produced his debut movie titled Otway the Movie: The Story of Rock n Roll’s Greatest Failure. A screening for producers was held at London’s Leicester Square with the final scenes from the movie filmed on the red carpet and edited into the film. The film was then taken to Cannes Film Festival and a 50-date tour of cinemas in both the UK and North America. It was subsequently voted the 2nd best film of the year in a poll of its readers conducted by The Guardian newspaper.

In 2016, Otway announced that he was planning to record a new album. Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, he will took his band to the Caribbean island of Montserrat to become the first international recording artist to record there since the Rolling Stones in 1989. The result was Montserrat - the first album of entirely new and original Otway material in over ten years.
